What Is Reiki Healing?
What Actually Happens in a Session

Reiki6 min read

Prana Is Already Within You

Reiki and Prana are one and the same. That's the first thing worth understanding, because most explanations skip straight to hand positions and energy flow without saying the most important part: the life force Reiki works with isn't being given to you from somewhere outside. It's already yours. The work of a session is activation, not acquisition.

A practitioner isn't a source of energy you're borrowing. They're someone trained to help direct the Prana you already carry — the way a tuning fork helps a note find its true pitch rather than creating the sound from nothing.

What Reiki Actually Is

Wherever you are in the world, this work can reach you. One session, one mirror, one honest conversation.

Reiki is the conscious direction of Prana. In practice, that means a practitioner uses light touch or hands held just above the body to help clear and move energy along the body's natural channels, called nadis, and through its energy centers, the chakras. The practitioner's role is closer to a guide than a generator. They're helping your own system do what it already knows how to do — just more freely.

Energy channels and Prana flow through the body during a Reiki session

Prana moves through the body in distinct channels. A session works with the whole system — not one isolated point.

What Happens in an Actual Session

Most sessions look simple from the outside. You lie down, fully clothed, in a quiet room. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above different points on your body, moving through a sequence over 45 minutes to an hour.

What people actually report feeling varies, but common experiences include:

  • Warmth or gentle tingling under the practitioner's hands
  • A sense of heaviness or lightness moving through the body
  • An unexpected wave of emotion that surfaces and passes
  • A mind that gradually stops racing — often for the first time in weeks

None of this requires belief going in. Many people arrive skeptical and still notice something shift by the end.

The Five Pranas

Prana isn't a single, uniform energy. Yogic tradition describes five distinct forms, each governing a different function in the body.

Prana Upward moving current

Governs breath and intake — what you bring in.

Apana Downward moving current

Governs elimination and release — what you let go of.

Samana Central current

Governs digestion — of food and of experience.

Udana Upward through the throat

Governs speech, growth, and expression.

Vyana Full body current

Pervades the whole body, governing circulation and coordinating everything the other four are doing.

Reiki Healing Benefits People Actually Notice

The benefits people describe most consistently are deep physical relaxation that lasts beyond the session itself, better and more restful sleep in the days after, emotional release that feels like relief rather than overwhelm, and a mental clarity that's hard to manufacture on your own after a long stretch of stress.

Reiki isn't positioned here as a replacement for medical care. It's a practice that supports the nervous system and energetic body alongside whatever else you're doing to take care of yourself.

Where This Fits at Aligned Within

Reiki is one of three pillars this work is built on — alongside Tarot and Yoga philosophy — all pointing back to the same underlying idea: one consciousness. If a session sounds like something your body has been asking for, it's one of the gentler places to start.

If you've been curious about Reiki and want to experience what a session actually feels like, this is held as a safe, quiet space to begin.
